Poker Hand Rankings

The player with the strongest suit or the one who has in his hand the strongest combination of cards played from community cards or pocket cards is automatically the winner in each poker hand. Possible poker winning combinations, listed and ranked from strongest to weakest are assembled below.

Royal Flush

Royal Flush The royal flush is the strongest of all combinations. Cards that make up a royal flush are as follows: a Ten, a Jack, a Queen, a King and an Ace of the same suit. These and only these cards from the same suit can form a royal flush. Suits refer to the "family" or group a card is divided or belongs to, i.e. hearts, spade, diamonds and club make up the four suits in a deck of cards.

Straight Flush

Straight Flush Following the royal flush is the straight flush. The straight flush consists of five straight cards that come from the same suit. For example, cards two, three, four, five and six from the suit of spades is called a straight flush.

Four of a Kind

Four of a Kind Third down the list of strongest, is called four or quads. This hand has four cards that have the same face value or same number. An example would be a nine of hearts, nine of spades, nine of diamonds and a nine of clubs. Simply put, same number plus different colors equals a four of a kind hand.

Full House

Full House The full house like the 80's show includes twins. It includes two cards with one number or face value plus three other cards with another face value or number or three of a kind. The player with the highest ranking three of a kind is determined winner of the hand in cases when there are two players holding full houses. An example of a full house is three suits of four and two suits of seven.

Flush

Flush The full house like the 80's show includes twins. It includes two cards with one number or face value plus three other cards with another face value or number or three of a kind. The player with the highest ranking three of a kind is determined winner of the hand in cases when there are two players holding full houses. An example of a full house is three suits of four and two suits of seven.

Straight

Straight Five cards of any suit in sequence is a straight. A high straight consists of a ten, a jack, queen, king and an ace. A low suit however consists of an ace, a two, three, four and a five.

Three of a Kind

Three of a Kind Three cards of the same number or the same face value make up the "trips" or the three of a kind. A six of hear, club, and a spade plus a nine of hearts and a four of hearts can make up a three of a kind hand as there are three six's and three hearts.

Two Pair

Two Pair Pairs, as is the meaning, are any pair of cards with the same face value or number. If two or more people have pairs at hand, the highest ranking card wins. In cases where the highest ranking is of the same value, the second highest ranking card will determine who wins. It had not been impossible for the second pair to be of similar ranks; winner of the hand will be determined by whoever player has the highest "kicker" or fifth card.

One Pair

One Pair A one pair hand consists of two cards containing the same face value or the same number.

High Card

High Card The weakest of all hands in the poker arena is referred to as the high card. Simply put it is the hand with the highest card or cards who wins.
